As part of the recent LASI Europe conference, roundtables were held focusing on Multimodal Learning Analytics (MMLA), a promising approach that explores how data from various sources can enrich learning and educational research.
The event facilitated discussions on the opportunities and challenges of MMLA in European education. The potential of MMLA to diversify data sources, enabling more inclusive assessment and opening up new possibilities with powerful tools like artificial intelligence, was highlighted. However, challenges such as privacy, compliance with regulations like GDPR, and the complexity of scaling these systems were also acknowledged.
Among the key opportunities discussed were how multimodal data can enable a broader evaluation of learning, encompassing not only digital environments but also social interactions, rather than focusing solely on task-based activities.
The conclusions from these roundtables will serve as a foundation for the upcoming EC-TEL workshop, where a more in-depth analysis of the particularities of the European context in relation to MMLA is expected, along with emerging collaboration opportunities among researchers in the field.
